Many people have wondered if it was possible for Jesus to be caught, tried by various people, then scourged and crucified all on a Friday.
Anne Jaubert's book tackles the problem with the new knowledge we've gotten from the Dead Sea scrolls. Jaubert believes "the internal evidence of the texts, Jubilees and the documents of Qumran...lay down that, in order to return to the Law of Moses...it is necessary to observe the festivals of the Alliance" (p 31) by the dates of the older calender.
An older calender, now sometimes called the Syrian calender, was held to by the more conservative groups among the Jews in 33 AD, while the less conservative Jews followed the calender used by the gentiles. Jaubert presents evidence that many of the early Christians followed this older calender. She traces hints in the Didache and other places to reveal "there exists a fundamental continuity between the Jewish fixed-day calender and the Christian calender (p 65).
The Didascalia places the Last Supper on Tuesday and the crucifixion on Friday, going by the older calender. Epiphanius also refers to these same dates. So does Victorinus, Clement of Alexandria and Apollinaris. Later disputes about the date of Easter Jaubert traces directly to the problems of the older, Syrian calender and the newer one. Problem solved?
